Short/Tall. Light/Dark. Heavy/Light. Solid/Translucent. Rigid/Flexible.
Once you organize your projects into logical groups, what more can you do to describe them? How can you describe them so that you can easily compare them and find what you are looking for?
First, ask yourself what you need.
A short, dark, heavy, solid, rigid base to support something.
A tall, light, transparent, flexible container to carry something.
There is a sweet spot when it comes to describing something. If you don’t use enough adjectives, the description is incomplete. Use too many, and the effort can be overwhelming.
After you define what you need, ask yourself these questions:
- What sets something apart from the rest? What do many of them have in common?
- Is the information easy to gather? Is the information available elsewhere?
- Is there an image or set of specifications or drawings that convey what is needed?
- Who is entering the information? Will those reviewing it find it helpful?
- Does the information need to be searchable, comparable, or just available for reference?
Taking the time to determine what is just right will help not only with finding what you need, but with ensuring that descriptive information is assigned to projects instead of skipped.
